For most of its products, Balmuda design utilizes production method known as " cutting work " Our affiliate factory that performs this process is located right in the neighborhood of the Balmuda design Koganei Base in Tokyo Japan. It takes only 30 seconds to get there on foot.
Cutting work is a method of " carving out " forms from a solid aluminum block. Materials are set (fixated) inside a large, computer-controlled machine called machining centre, and milled bit by bit with carving tools called drill or end mill.
A processed component is most beautiful immediately after being milled in the machine. A rainbow of colors glistens on the freshly cut element. It is a pity that we cannot show you the fresh-cut real thing here.
Yet as it is, it cannot be a finished product since it gets scratched quite easily. It requires further process of surface treatment such as polishing, shot blast, alumite treatment, coating etc..
By the way, the picture shows the under side of the base of Silence, our floor light scheduled to be available soon. Though it looks like an ordinary round base, its simplicity owes to the cutting work applied.
