When BALMUDA design decided to create the desk lamp we researched the characteristics of every type of light source currently available. We became certain that LED is the best light source around. LED does not emit harmful substances like fluorescent lighting, and LED also does not flicker. In addition, LED has a very long life as compared to incandescent lights that run out within several thousand hours of use. So we concluded that LED is unmatched as the best light source for the future because of the great energy savings and the long life span of the product.

We have determined that there are various benefits to using LED as light source but what is the most dominant point of the design? We believe this to be the smallness of LED. Because of this we can make the lamp case very thin. This has never been possible with a conventional light source. The thickness of the case is only 1.3 centimeters and the diameter of the pipe is just 1 centimeter (looks bigger than the case of Highwire). The desk lamps of 20 years ago were designed only for manual work. Highwire was designed for the present of performing work on a computer. This requires looking at a computer monitor for long periods of time and operating a keyboard and a mouse.
Highwire was designed to be the perfect height to moderately light the computer display so as not to cause a reflection and to light the entire working space. e.g. keyboard, mouse etc. Also it is not too bright as you don't experience the source of light directly.

While developing Highwire we concentrated on these words. "It is the [FUTURE]". We who created Highwire using LED technology strongly felt that power LED is the light of the next generation and that it will be used for both indoor and outdoor lighting.
Incandescent lights including Halogen lamps have not changed since their invention by Edison and basically their long history may be approaching the end. Candlelight was transformed into incandescent lighting, and orange light will gradually be turned into pure white light. We created Highwire to embody the future that we imagined. When we first drew the sketch that would become the original design we imagined darkness to be illumined by pure white light. Light that is clean and beautiful. Like a lighthouse shining its beacon upon us.

At first we imagined the light as being in the far off distance and as the light gradually approached us, there was reality at the end. We are preparing the next dream for this new light right now.
